hello friends,

I'm planning to go to Burning man (Black Rock Desert, Nevada) this year. ;-)

I'm a new newbie to BM and looking for some tips/groups/friends and would like to rent an RV.

My friend Marcia is going to join me and we are very interested in renting the RV. We are looking for 2 more responsible and mature BM participants who would like to share the RV cost.

Any tips/recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks for reading.
Much love,
Rajan

Skip the RV... you'll have more fun with a tent.

Depends on your definition of "fun" (which would have to include being cold at night, pit privies, and an aversion to daily bathing).

"being cold at night, pit privies, and an aversion to daily bathing). "

Dress warm before you go to sleep.

Eat 4 apricots at night and hit the porta potties in the am before they heat up.

Plenty of folks would lend you some privacy when you take a shower... just bring a sun shower and plenty of water.

My feeling about the RVs is that if it's your first time going, you won't be prepared to take care of the RV as far as keeping it clean of playa dust and other issues.

If you go with someone that has experience with a RV and has gone to BM... you are better off.

If not, tenting it would be easier.

Some good advice there, but more for experienced Burners than newbies.

These guys are coming from New York. They probably don't own tents or solar showers, and how do you propose they get lots of water to BRC without renting a vehicle? It's unclear if he wants to rent here or near BRC, but either way, four people sharing an RV makes more economic sense than a newbie couple flying to Reno and trying to rent a car there and either hauling supplies from here or buying them there and then trying to figure out what to do with them.

Another advantage is that with an RV, you park and you're set up. No time wasted pitching and unpitching a tent, and your moop stays inside with you.

I've been traveling from NY to the playa for over 10 years.

I find it easy to ship my stuff to the hotel I will be staying at the day before I fly back to NY. That way I fly with just my accordion and a small backpack.

I rent a minivan and line it with drop cloths to keep it clean. I buy my supplies in Reno and pick up my bike rental there. Throw everything in the car and off to the playa I go. Takes about 1.5 hours to pitch my tent and get all settled in.

Renting a car in Reno is a lot cheaper than renting a RV... and it costs less on fuel too. All you have to buy is a tent, sleeping bag and air mattress.

Then again, I like camping. I think you are a bit removed from the whole experience when you RV it, but that's just MHO.

Renting an RV in Reno isn't the best way to go ... rental rates are very high and they tend to sell out early anyway. Many people who do rent in Reno arrange to do so on their way home from the previous year.

I've been renting in Vegas for the past 7 years (this will be my 10th overall). It requires an extra couple of days for travel, but that gives you a chance to acclimate to the desert on the way up and decompress (as you clean out the RV) on the way back. Unfortunately, other people have started using this route, so the RV rates are moving up, though still not as high as Reno or SF.

Put it like this: if you KNOW you like desert camping, want to acquire tents, sleeping bags, coolers and other gear, don't mind heavily used porta-potties, can live without a kitchen for a week and are willing to wait on long lines for ice, and are sure you're going to want to shower in the afternoon, then tenting might be for you.
