Rajan was asking about connecting with some folks and doing BM with a RV.
I suggested tenting it.
Mitch seems pro RV.
So let's throw it out there... who likes to go RV.... comments?

Tents rule! -

Re: RV or Tent?
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 5:54 PMI'm still trying to wrap my mind around the concept of where a New Yorker might store camping gear for 50 weeks a year. -

I really appreciate your kind responses. I think you both are right. It is just matter of choice.
Cheers to Rob and Mitch :-) -

Good point.
If you fly with your gear, you really can't carry much unless you ship your stuff ahead of time.
My camping gear takes up one standard sized Army duffel bag. That's a 4 person tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, sun shower, 3' stakes, shade structure, tools and some other assorted items.
My clothes and other crap that I bring out takes up one large suitcase. -

Re: RV or Tent?
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 8:27 PMOkay, see, I do it differently.
I go out with suitcases filled with empty 5 gallon water jugs, perennial RV supplies (like fuses, you really don't want to get caught without fuses) wooden "silverware" (it burns), and a portable computer or two and various peripherals and some other theme camp supplies. Then, somewhere between Pahrump and Reno, I buy all sorts of stuff that a New Yorker who rarely leaves town might buy: underwear, socks, khaki pants, all at prices that don't reflect Manhattan real estate.
Then I go food shopping in ginormous supermarkets. Not quite Fairway, but how often do you get to Trader Joe's if you don't live near Union Square? Plus, Raley's, they could teach Food Emporium a thing or two. By the time I hit the Playa, I'm used to the climate, and being able to shop several times, I don't forget stuff that I wanted and I can efficiently fill the fridge and freezer.
Then, on the way home, I meander through Fallon (great pancake place there, and they don't seem to mind you coming in covered in Playa) -- it's always the big Labor Day picnic in Fallon when I pass through. Then I spend a day or two in Beatty, which has these very clean hot springs at one of its 3 RV parks. I clean the RV, I clean me, I spend a couple of days in a place where there's nothing but a few other Burners doing the same thing and some misguided German tourists and a few jack rabbits. We finish off the food we didn't use, try to make the vibe last a few more days, and mail the water jugs and other lightweight but bulky stuff back home.
Finally, back to Vegas, to a very nice RV park that used to be way south of town (and is now, sadly, in the southern part of town), and then, suitably decompressed, back to New York.
A shower every day, more bacon than you could shake, well, bacon at, a roof for sunbathing, heat at night (not really a/c during the day, I only run that if somebody I'm camping with has trouble with the heat), a full kitchen and a fridge, all for a price that equates to a crappy NY or SF hotel. I leave no trace, carry some camp trash out with me, come home healthy, happy and ready to start planning for the next year.
Now, the expense is up there, so it's best to share. But I love spending the extra time in Nevada and I love not having to deal with civilization right after BRC.
To each his own, of course. -

How much time does your entire adventure take... including time on the playa?

Re: RV or Tent?
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 7:26 PM2 weeks total. I usually leave after work on Thursday, get back the Thursday two weeks following.
That's a disadvantage, but I need to be there as early as possible Monday and I can't leave before the following Sunday anyway. (I usually leave in the wee hours of Monday morning, before the line gets too long but after the post-Temple Burn line has dissipated).

Re: RV or Tent?
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 5:20 PMLast year was my virgin burn but I was able to fit a 3 person tent, yoga mat, rebar, sleeping bag, and some furry clothing in one checked bag. As for storing camping gear in the city? All I have in my tent, sleeping bag, and single burner stove to bring. Not so bad. Just be prepared for a LOT of dust in your tent. Hell, I didnt spend much time in it anyway. It just doesnt seem like roughing it in an RV. I actually enjoyed inhaling barrels of dust during the storms. But I suppose that's just my fetish. -

Becoming "one with the dust" is part of the fun.

Re: RV or Tent?
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 11:25 AMLast year, I took an old cotton sheet, cut it to cover the mesh panels on my tent, and with a rough basting stitch, sewed them on. This kept most of the dust out, compared to the burn without 'em.

Re: RV or Tent?
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 2:21 PMOther than sleeping and cooking (and doing some computer work during dust storms), I don't spend much time in the RV.
RVers get plenty of dust.
